Duneshore Shallows | Tangerine Fission

$750.00

As evidenced by its name, the Duneshore Shallows represents a different approach to the “dive watch.” We didn’t call our diver the Abyss Master or Ocean Lord or Kraken Blaster…no, we named this iteration of the Duneshore the “Shallows,” as the shallow seas are home to 90% of all marine species, as well as most recreational dives. The Shallows is a diver that’s capable (with 200M of water resistance), unashamedly casual, and in touch with the reality that - no matter the spec - a dive watch is more likely to be worn with short sleeves than it is with a wet suit. Why not embrace it?

On Wrist

The Duneshore Shallows offers an extremely unique wearing experience. Bold hands, a domed steel bezel, and sweeping, sand-dunes-inspired case lines create visual interest from every angle. Meanwhile, a double-curved caseback (north-south and east-west) makes this watch supremely comfortable to wear.

Merlion

Yes, the caseback is curved and features a deep 3-D relief of our "merlion." Notice that ring in its mouth? That's the door knocker from our logo! Also, despite the curved back, the Shallows still achieves 200M of water resistance - more than enough for almost any recreational dive.

Dial-namics

Like its predecessor, the hands of the Shallows are inspired by fountain pen nibs. That writing theme continues with applied hour markers styled after inkdrops and a semi-gloss dial that is enamel-painted, baked, and polished to achieve the look of wet ink. Furthermore, this dial sports a "sandwich" construction: the minute marks are actually perforations, exposing a second, lume-printed dial beneath the primary dial.

Lume!

The Shallows features a heavy dose of C3 SuperLuminova so reading the time in low-light is no issue. All the hands, all the hour markers, the minutes, and the bezel have lume.

Fine Detail

Visitor Watch Co. prides itself on sketch-to-steel development with minimal compromise. We never dumb things down to save a buck, and you'll find evidence of this philosophy all over the Shallows. The flush-mounted, inset bezel indices are one such detail. We really wanted the 30, 45, and 0/60 bezel marks to pop with polished surrounds. But, with a circularly brushed bezel, this wasn't going to be possible - unless we made each index its own, individual component. So, we did that. Yet in order to preserve the design, these inset indices couldn't be simple "round stock" parts. Instead, they have a complex shape and curved top surface to match the curvature of the bezel. And the index at 0/60 is 0.5mm taller so that you can locate it with a fingertip.

Finer Brushing

We strive to offer the most intricate, finely finished cases available below $1k USD. Maybe there are some out there who do it better...but if so, there aren't many.

One-of-a-kind Strap

We also designed a unique NBR strap for the Shallows, inspired by the classic Riva Aquarama. Atop the strap, twin sets of long grooves are separated by a gap, just like the wood detail that runs along the top of the Aquarama. Near the lugs, the sides of the strap are angled inward like the hull at the bow of the boat. Then, as you move toward the tail of the strap (or stern) that angle twists out, once again mimicking the boat's design. Finally, the tail terminates in an angled semi-circle, as seen on the Riva. On the underside of the strap, there are ribbed, hollowed out sections to provide some extra airflow to your wrist and prevent sweat accumulation.

A Different Philosophy

Ultimately, the Duneshore Shallows is a fun-loving, unashamedly casual sport watch that still has all the right specs (200M WR, screw-down crown, 3mm thick AR-coated sapphire, etc.). It's the dive watch as an "objet d'art," to quote Calibre321. Or, as Worn & Wound put it, "…we don’t often think of watches in this interpretive way – you’d never ask someone about the artistic statement of a Tudor Pelagos, for example. But there’s a quirkiness and a veiled mystery to the Duneshore Shallows that invites this kind of thinking. It’s a physical object that seems open to interpretation in the same way as a Charlie Kaufman film, or a King Crimson record, or Moby Dick."
